The Neapolis park (from the Greek meaning ‘new city’) is home to most of the surviving ancient monuments that were built starting from the city’s founding, through the Greek period and the Roman conquest. The park, that was conceived with aim of circumscribing all the monuments in an area protected from urban expansion, was created by the Soprintendenza della Sicilia Orientale between 1952 and 1955. The greatest monuments had already been brought to light during excavations conducted by Domenico Lo Faso Pietrasanta, who published the results in 1840. His work was followed by two great names in early Sicilian archaeology, Paolo Orsi and Luigi Bernabò Brea, who was superintendent when the Archaeological Park was established. The park rises on the Temenite hill. To the south are the great monuments of the Neapolis; to the north the Latomie (stone quarries) cut into the rocky hill. The River Anapo flows near the park. As we know from early descriptions, the entire hill has been rich in underground water ever since antiquity. Today, this is still borne out by the Nymphaeum, the monumental fountain situated at the top, on the terrace overlooking the Greek Theatre.
