The starting point of this particular research consists in the discovery of a manuscript written in 1967 by Giuseppe Marchini, art historian of the Uffizi Galleries entitled "Opere d’arte danneggiate a Firenze e in provincia" in which he lists all the damage caused to the artistic heritage of Florence and the province.

50 years after the flood, this document is valuable for the amount of information contained. It examines the works of the Italian state and of public institutions, museums, churches, conservatories and even tabernacles, divided by localities and places, also specifying the environment in which the works have been flooded and the height reached by water. The list as a whole provides extensive documentation which so far was unknown, since the damage reports have been published in a piecemeal manner and is also not limited to more or less distinguished paintings alone, but also to furniture and other types.
