Norman Raeben (1901-1978) The Wandering Painting

The first Norman Raeben retrospective at the Venice Ghetto 

The works of the Ukrainian-American Jewish artist, who was Bob Dylan's painting master, are exhibited for the first time in the Venice Ghetto, in a sort of ideal itinerary through the places of his painting and his wandering: Paris, New York, Venice, Provincetown.

Throughout his artistic journey, Raeben, while not finding his own place within the artistic trends of his time, nevertheless influenced numerous American artists, Jewish intellectuals, and immigrants of Yiddish culture. 

Fabio Fantuzzi, curator of the exhibition as well as of the catalogue (ebook in English), together with other scholars, follows the stages of his wandering painting realised through different techniques, from drawing to painting, from portraits to landscapes, from nudes to cityscapes.

Famous are his portraits of New York Jewish artists and intellectuals, including Sholem Aleichem, Mary Adler, Pearl Pearson Adler, Luba Harrington, Miriam Kressyn, Bob Haggart, Paul Musikonsky, Seymour Osborne, Stella Adler and Bob Dylan.
