Puccini e... Livorno

ON THE OCCASION OF THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF GIACOMO PUCCINI'S DEATH

It was a warm summer evening, 27 June 1886, when the Band of the First Regiment of the Grenadiers of Sardinia performed the first notes of the opera Le Villi in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele. 

Maestro Montanari, flanked by the young Giacomo Puccini, was preparing an event that would forever link his name to Livorno. The public, unaware of Puccini's future greatness, applauded warmly, welcoming an artist destined to transform emotions into unforgettable melodies. 

This represented Puccini's first successful experience.

In March 1895, he returned to Livorno for the rehearsals of Manon Lescaut, enthusiastically welcomed at the Teatro dei Nuovi Avvalorati, as he began to create melodies destined to captivate. 

His third visit, on 9 August 1897, was marked by the notes of La Bohème, conducted by Vittorio Podesti; there he felt at home, surrounded by the affection of an audience that recognised his genius. He stayed until 14 August, when the Goldoni vibrated to his operas. 

Then, on 13 March 1902, it was a crucial moment: the performance of Tosca, memorable for the power of the opera and the enthusiastic reception of the public, stunned even Puccini himself.

The applause and ovations confirmed that Livorno was not just a stop, but a stage where emotions came to life.
