"While perfection is something that no artist in the world will ever attain, it is a path that all artists are forced to take, since it is what enables them to claim greater responsibility for their own work and actions. All due distinctions aside, my aim fully coincides with that of the people working alongside me on this fascinating project – organizing the Combat Prize. “Organizing” means doing: it means bringing together and coordinating what would otherwise remain separate and scattered actors and resources, in an attempt to bridge different cultures.
The 2015 Combat Prize is probably the edition that marks the final breakthrough of this event on the Italian and international art scene. Certainly, it is one of the most lively of the six editions held so far. If our original aim was to set in comparison and dialogue different expressive approaches and at the same time to gain an overview of contemporary artistic languages, then it seems that we have fully met our goal. Proof of this is offered by the roughly 1,300 artworks submitted, increasingly by non-Italian artists, who make up 30% of the overall participants. The vast majority of them come from Northern and Eastern Europe, but there are also a significant number of artists from North and South America, Africa, Asia and the Pacific.
In this sixth edition, as confirmation of the coherence and ambition underlying the “Combat project”, in addition to monetary prizes for the winners in each category and the assignment of an important residency in Berlin to artists under 35, much attention has been focused on residency programmes in Tuscany – especially Livorno and Florence. The aim of these residencies, a project I strongly believe in, is to strengthen the culture of contemporary art in the region through the presence of artists with different social and geographical backgrounds, in such a way as to launch a process of professional development and mutual engagement, along with a debate on languages and practices in contemporary art.
As the mind of this contest, I plan to continue to show trust and support towards those who have embarked on the path of art. As a resolute gardener will plant seeds even in broken ground, I hope that at least one of my seeds will sprout and bear fruit.
Thanks are owed to the members of the jury for the enthusiasm and commitment with which they have accomplished the difficult task of selecting the works within such as short time. But my greatest acknowledgement goes to the artists, who with great generosity and involvement have accompanied me in this challenging and wide-ranging project".
