To celebrate the 500th anniversary of the birth of Cosimo I de' Medici, the first Grand Duke of Florence, a triptych of initiatives has been created in symbolic places of the Uffizi Galleries.
The salient moments of the government of the first Grand Duke Medici are recounted in the series of eight tapestries, produced in two series under the direction of Pietro Févère, head of the Grand Ducal Manufactory.
The choice of the episodes of the Stories of Cosimo I is probably due to the writer Francesco Rondinelli, who was also the author of the iconographic program for the decorations of Pietro da Cortona and Ciro Ferri in the Rooms of the Planets on the main floor of Palazzo Pitti.
The series of tapestries, a real "woven biography", was intended for the Room of Saturn, the heart of the sovereign’s power, consecrated to the Private Audiences of Grand Duke Ferdinando II, who legitimized and ennobled his government, paying tribute to his predecessor with this commission.
