Sofonisba Anguissola, Marietta Tintoretto, Lavinia Fontana, Artemisia Gentileschi, Margherita Caffi, Rosalba Carriera, Angelica Kauffmann... these are but a few of the extraordinary female interpreters of painting present within the collections of Florence's state museums. Finally-an "ad hoc" guide that does justice to this very important presence, which has never before been measured and quantified. This book is a brief excursus consisting in a preface by Antonio Paolucci, an introductory note, and 20 biographies of artists who lived and worked between the 16th and 20th centuries, illustrated with the works on display in the various museums. Well-known images (by Artemisia Gentilischi) are found along with lesser-known works (by Beatrice Ancillotti Goretti, Luisa Silei, Ada van de Schalk...), thereby giving life to a fascinating tour through the history of modern and contemporary art of all genres: portraits, still lifes, historical scenes, landscapes, interiors... Maddalena Paola Winspeare, the editor of this book, is an art historian who has worked at enhancing and promoting our cultural heritage with exhibitions and publications, inluding: Giovanni Fattori.
