Antonio Paolucci's words, taken from his lectio magistralis entitled 'Piazza del Duomo in Siena, a city and its heart' of 6 July 2017, open this journey to discover themes and images that are particularly representative of Siena's religious, artistic and cultural identity.

In these pages we discover the character of a people proud of its traditions. Through the suggestions derived from some of the city's iconic places - the Piazza del Campo, the Cathedral, the Palazzo Pubblico, Santa Maria della Scala, etc. -, civic pride, mutual benevolence and the strong bond with the Virgin Mary are emphasised.

Like Paolucci's text, the rich black and white photo gallery that embellishes this publication is itself configured as an itinerary that winds its way through Siena's most important places, works and monuments, with the aim of offering unique suggestions both to those who live in this city, but also to those who, though not living here, love and appreciate it for its history and immeasurable beauty.
