The book presents itself as a detailed and exhaustive tool to get to know or learn more about the marvellous world of working ivory.
The book’s author, Bettina Schindler, begins by explaining the term ‘ivory’ and goes on to describe the various techniques (Block inlay, intaglio and perforations) with which, especially between the 5th and 17th centuries, true masterpieces were made both in Italy and throughout Europe. Each procedure is explained in a detailed way, with images that make this subject matter even more interesting. To conclude, general information on ivory – such as its colour, conservation and restoration.
A section, edited by Dott. ssa Paola Candeloro, rounds off the book. It is dedicated to the handmade works in ivory housed in the Florentine museums of the Bargello and degli Argenti, with in-depth entries on its history. Curious facts are also included.

Bettina Schindler, the author of the text, graduated from the Opificio delle Pietre Dure of Florence, specialising in the restoration of ancient objects in ivory, tortoise shell, amber, bone, wood and other organic materials. She has written numerous articles in art magazines and books; she has also held many conferences and collaborations with prominent Italian museums.

Paola Candeloro, the author of the entries, is an art historian and collaborates on various projects with the Municipality of Florence, including the enhancement of local historical traditions.

The “Technique and Materials” series by Sillabe was born so as to satisfy the curiosity of attentive students. It is edited by Maria Paola Masini, who has been working in the Education Section of the Soprintendenza per il Polo Museale Fiorentino for some time now. It is suited to all those who wish to know the tools of the trade.
