FAITH IS THE NECESSARY INSPIRATION FOR RELIGIOUS ART
Ten of the eleven artistic furnishings stolen from the Museum of the Seminary of Montarioso in July 1989 return to Siena, works of immense value that span over six centuries of history, from the transalpine Romanesque of the Cross of Casciano delle Masse, to the Gothic fourteenth century, up to all the seasons following the Counter-Reformation, recognizable in the more modern pyxes and chalices.
The Reliquary from the ancient Cistercian abbey of San Galgano, in the Chiusdino area, stands out above all, as monumental testimony of the refinement that Sienese art had reached in the fourteenth century.
Restoring this heritage to the Sienese community was made possible thanks to the commitment of the Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage.
The complex restoration project of the objects, recovered in a state of massive deterioration and damage, was entrusted to the Vatican Museums.
The richly illustrated volume is completed with essays by scholars who develop the different facets of the story and delve into the issues inherent to their artistic value.
