Exhibition catalogue

Assisi, Palazzo Vallemani, Pinacoteca Comunale
24 March-3 November 2024
Assisi, not unlike other Italian cities of great cultural and artistic interest, is known worldwide thanks to the presence of the Giotto cycle preserved in the Basilica of San Francesco.
The collection of the Pinacoteca Comunale (Municipal Art Gallery), created with the aim of preserving the city's artistic heritage, includes paintings dated between the 13th and 16th centuries, mostly from public buildings, roadside shrines, city gates, confraternity headquarters and city hospitals, works such as the Majesty attributed to Giotto, paintings from the school of Pietro Perugino, and everyday objects that tell the story of life in Assisi in ancient times.
The exhibition Assisi nel ’900. Le arti visive brings together over 130 works by the most significant artists who worked in Assisi in the 20th century. The works, placed in continuity with the older ones in the civic collection in a space of common reflection and contemplation, reflect the social function of art, its power in representing the cultural heritage of an entire community.
The catalogue, in addition to an important critical apparatus, presents numerous large format colour images of all the works on display.
