The Modern Art Gallery, inaugurated in its current site in 1924, possess nearly 4000 works of sculpture and painting from the 19th and 20th Centuries. Its holdings include the collections of the Florentine grand dukes and City Council, as well as several private collections, noteworthy amongst artwork accumulated by Diego Martelli. Many works by Canova, Dupré, Fattori, Lega, Signorini, De Nittis and other important artists can be viewes in these splendid rooms restored by the Lorraine in the late 18th Century and which remained a royal-family residence up until 1922.
