from the memoirs of Piero Carboni 1909, the extraordinary testimony of an artistic encounter

The unpublished twist in Modigliani’s sculpting past.

A new book finally breaking down Modigliani’s artistic activity in his native Livorno in 1909, through a series of unpublished documents and papers. A new take on the never-ending and notorious 1984 “prank”, separating it from the provincialism it had previously been relegated to.

The original sculptures actually exist

Piero Carboni plays the leading role in this legendary adventure, though for the most part unawarely. With an almost naive talent, Carboni describes Livorno over the last century, through fascinating sequences of extraordinary encounters and events.

The chronological order of the events is clearly expanded by Maurizio Bellandi, including the reports by experts and consultants, the 1984 parallel exhibition, up to the trial and its closing arguments.

The book features previously unpublished photos and pictures of Modigliani’s masterpieces, as well as detailed scientific and historic documents and a summary of the salient parts of the trial, which sees Carboni as a protagonist, much against his will.
