In today's performance practice, the use, history, and even existence of tunings other than ordinary tuning in 'cultured' music are almost completely unknown.

Many violinists of our time have never heard of it, while for others it turns out to be an extremely contrived and undoubtedly obsolete practice, despite the fact that composers such as Paganini, Mahler, Stravinsky, Bartók, and Kodály have made use of it, even in more recent times.

There was, however, a moment in history, at the time of the development of idiomatic writing for the violin, in which the use of unconventional tunings acquired in various European countries the dignity of true art, allowing all the timbral, technical and polyphonic characteristics of string instruments to be brought to light, taking them to their extreme possibilities.

The book offers a quick historical survey of the origins and meaning of the term, but also of its use in various European countries, particularly in the German area, up to the 18th century.

Finally, the readers will find brief instructions for use and practical considerations for instrumentalists who would like to experiment with it in modern times.
